morris minors, ford e83ws, and jowett bradfords for instance were all popular choices in britain throughout the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. where once they were a common sight, and barely registered as they drove by so numerous were they in their heyday, now the surviving few are keenly preserved and sought after. compared to their saloon equivalents, most light commercial variants whether they be vans or pickups, are nearly always much rarer. the reason for the rarity of most pickups is simply that they usually lead a very hard, and usually quite short, life. whereas cars tended to be looked after, at least in their early years, pickups were often abused from day one, tasked with hauling all manner of tools, equipment and stock around the country in all weather, often in the hands of less-than-caring employees. vans too had a hard time of it, but at least their load area was covered by a roof. if it was lucky, a pickup might benefit from a tonneau cover to protect the rear load area from the weather, but many were left open and as a result, were frequently rained upon, hastening the arrival of rust. some had all-steel floors in the back, while others had wooden boards. whichever a given pickup had, regular dousings of rain in the british climate, coupled with tools and products being pushed in and out, would soon see corrosion develop. the classic pickups featured on this site have somehow survived into old age. the lucky few will have led easy lives in the hands of caring owners, who perhaps were not involved in a trade that relied on hauling heavy items around in all weathers. others may have been purchased but soon found to be inappropriate for the task they were purchased for, and simply pushed into the corner of a shed, barn or warehouse, where they'd reside for many a year, perhaps forgotten until a clearance of the building revealed them once more. many of these lightweight trucks will have been found in deplorable condition, with only their rarity ensuring that someone with time, funds and dedication took them on, transforming them from a rusty ruin into a vehicle to be proud of once again. hopefully the classic 1950's ford shown below, covered in dust after years of storage, and truly in "barn find" condition, went on to be restored. most interesting old load-luggers lead quiet peaceful lives now, just venturing out for the occasional show or road run. a few though still work for their living, the peugeot 404 for instance shown below was just one of several we've seen while on holiday abroad, acting as a reminder that just because they've a few years under their wheels, these historic small trucks can be just as useful as their modern counterparts. in fact many preserved examples are now owned by businesses who use their old pickup or van for promotional purposes, which again is why many derelict vehicles, that perhaps for an individual would be uneconomic to restore, have been dragged out of sheds and fields up and down the land, and went on to be restored, often at considerable expense. hopefully this site will be of interest to anyone that likes smaller commercial vehicles. i've had a few old pickups over the years, my favourite being the austin a40 pickup, a small 10cwt vehicle that shared some of its panels, and its 1200cc running gear, with the a40 devon saloon of the late 1940s and early 1950s. one day i'd like a pre-war pickup, but given that post-war pickups are rare, finding a pre-war example needing some work won't be an easy or quick task i'm sure.
